Douglas Hjort Douglas Hjort passed from this life on December 27, 2008 at his home in Urbandale, Iowa following a year long battle with brain cancer. A memorial service will take place at Union Congregational Church in Medicine Lake, Montana on Saturday, May 30 at 10:00 am. Doug was born on July 27, 1935 to Dewey and Alice Hjort of Medicine Lake, Montana. He graduated from Medicine Lake High School in 1953, spent some time in college and served in the U.S. Army. On December 23, 1962 he married Joyce Schnittgen in Medicine Lake. He graduated from Montana State University in 1971. Doug was a farm boy through and through and loved every aspect of agriculture. He worked as an agricultural marketing consultant for the past 40 years, and was a frequent contributor to the Iowa Public Television show “Market to Market” and other broadcasts and publications. Doug’s faith was an integral part of his life, and he held numerous leadership roles in the church, most recently as a member of Urbandale United Church of Christ. He was a very talented musician, and was involved in various musical groups throughout his life. Doug was dedicated to his family, and looked forward to spending time with them whenever possible.
A favorite renewal spot for Doug and the family was the Teton Mountain Range in Jackson, Wyoming.
Doug is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce; his five daughters, Kathaleen (Rod) DeReus, Charlene Hjort, Janine (Kelly) Reames, Coreen (Todd) Witke, and Colleen Hjort; and his seven grandchildren, Lucas, Benjamin and Jacob DeReus, Alexandria and Christopher Reames, and Jared and Evan Witke, each of whom held a special place in “Papa’s” heart.
Other survivors include his brother, Howard (Marinetta), six nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law, Violet Hjort and Ellen O ‘Brien.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest brother Richard and his sister Judy.
Services were held on Sunday, January 4, at Urbandale United Church of Christ. The remains have been cremated, and burial at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery will take place this summer.

This news leaves a huge hole in my heart. I worked for Mr.Hjort at FGL and when he went on his own. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
