Thora Petersen A funeral service for Thora Petersen will be at l0:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at Reserve Lutheran Church in Reserve, Montana. Pastor Johnette Grefe will officiate and burial will be at the Eden Valley Cemetery east of Reserve. Thora, 99, died at Sheridan Memorial Hospital May 29, 2009. Thora was born May l8, 1910, in Dagmar, Montana, a daughter of Niels (Dakota Mand) and Marie (Haahr) Christensen. In 1918 her mother died in the flu epidemic and Thora, who was only 8 years old, began living with various neighbors. She attended local schools and received her 8th grade diploma. She learned to work very hard for her keep at an early age. On June l5, 1929, Thora married Clarence Petersen in Scobey, Montana, and they made their home in the Antelope/Reserve area until moving to the farm west of Reserve in l937; farming there until retirement in 1967. They moved into Reserve in 1962 and Plentywood in 1982. Clarence and Thora's principle recreation was dancing: waltzes and foxtrots. They smoothly circled the floor enjoying themselves and entertaining the crowds at the Blue Moon, Reserve Hall, Brush Lake, the Danish Brotherhood Hall in Dagmar and the Sons of Norway Hall in Antelope. Most recently Thora danced the waltz at the Fiddler's Jam Sessions at the Blue Moon.
Clarence and Thora were married for seventy-one and a half years, and he was her soul mate, best friend and companion but left her side in November, 2000.
After Clarence died, Thora traveled with Judy visiting Florida, Washington State, California, Arizona, South Dakota, Missouri, Minnesota and locations in Montana. Thora was an incredibly shy and very private person who never complained. She enjoyed walking and jumping rope until the age of 98 and shared her gift for making divinity, fudge and whole wheat bread with manor residents and guests. Eleven days before her death, Thora celebrated her 99th birthday.
She is survived by her children: Clarence, Jr. and his wife Esther of Thousand Palms, California, Gary Petersen and his friend Jeannie of Apache Junction, Arizona, Connie Lane of Robinsdale, Minnesota and Judy Gray and her husband Don of Reserve, Montana. Also surviving are eleven grandchild and 15 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence, brothers and sister: Ernest, Arthur, Axel, Dewey, Edward, Harold, Esther, Viggo and Art and a grandson Clinton Petersen.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.
