Lloyd Carlson Funeral services for Lloyd H. Carlson were held at 2:30 PM Tuesday, March 9. Rev. Tim Hutslar officiated at the service at the Union Congregational Church in Medicine Lake; interment was in Medicine Lake Cemetery. Casketbearers were Curtis Carlson, Ryan and Leonard Hallesy, Mark Lubbers, Gregg Sautter, and Chad Tetrault; ushers were George Waters and David Murray. Recognized as Honorary Bearers were special friends from Arizona, Helen Knox, Marie Wright, Scott & Megan Castillo, Alfonso & Celsa Ruiz, John & Karen Keeler, and Dwight & Marie Nelson. Lloyd died early Friday morning, March 5, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home, where he had been resident for about 3½ years; he was 87. The youngest of ten children, Lloyd was born February 16, 1923 at Madoc, Montana, the son of Gilbert and Bertha (Rollins) Carlson. Raised on a farm north of Peerless, he attended the Butte Creek and Peerless Schools. After Lloyd left school, he worked for a time in Twin Valley, Minnesota before returning to Montana where he worked for the railroad in Bainville, and entered the U. S. Army in 1943.
A military police NCO, he was stationed first in Washington and later in San Luis Obispo, California. He worked traffic control and did town patrol and he and his partner had front-row seats for the Bob Hope USO show! Off duty he worked unloading produce and made sure that unmarketable but usable melons and other produce found their way onto base for the GI’s!
Lloyd married Esther Brien; they had a son, Leonard, before they divorced.
Discharged in February, 1946, Lloyd came to Medicine Lake where he worked unloading rail cars and hauling grain and coal. He started working for John Stubban as a water well driller’s helper, and later Lloyd and Albert Andersen bought the drilling machine and equipment and formed Western Drilling Company.
Lloyd married June Young of Froid March 8, 1957 at the Union Congregational Church in Medicine Lake the first couple married in the new church! They and their family have maintained active membership there since; Lloyd served in the Men’s Fellowship.
In the 1970's, Lloyd and his son, Curtis, formed Carlson Drilling, working in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota as licensed water well drillers. Drilling for water was Lloyd’s life’s passion; he was a life member of the Montana Water Well Driller’s Association, served on it’s board of directors and continued working in the field until he was 80 years old!
In 1986, Lloyd and June began spending the winter months in Yuma, Arizona; enjoying the relaxing lifestyle on the patio of their home there. Lloyd loved picking fresh grapefruit and oranges for breakfast each morning!
After heart surgery in 1972, Lloyd stayed active as long as his health permitted and walked 2 miles a day, 6 days a week.
Lloyd is survived his wife, June, of Medicine Lake; two sons, Leonard Hallesy and his wife, Cheri, of Elk River, Minnesota; and Curtis Carlson and his wife Ryan, of Surprise, Arizona; and by three daughters: Carol Lubbers and her husband Mark, of Billings; Karen Sautter and her husband Gregg, of Missoula; and Connie Tetrault, of Medicine Lake. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Leonard’s children Shane, Ryan, and Shannon; Curtis’ children Travis, Nicholas, and Bryce; Carol’s children Ali and Shelby; Karen’ s children Jade and Kyla; and Connie’s sons Eric and Chad; and by three great-grandchildren, Jake and Ally Hallesy and Jennifer Joseph. Besides his parents, his two brothers and three half-brothers and four half-sisters, Lloyd was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Scott Tetrault.
Lloyd’s family wants to say “Thank You” to the staff of Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home and to Dr. Kirk Stoner for the wonderful care he received for the last several years.
